NASCAR México Series raced at San Luis Potosí for their 7th round

The Top-Mexican racing series started their second-half of the 2026 season visiting the Súper Óvalo Potosino with two races remaining to the end of the regular season.

Max Gutiérrez inherited and kept the lead to get his first win of the season in the main series; Emiliano Richards rallied from last to first on the Challenge division.

One leader

The seventh round of the season, named ‘San Luis Potosí 200’, was held at the half-mile track located in Villa de Zaragoza municipality, San Luis Potosí, under an overcast sky.

Germán Quiroga grabbed Pole Position on Saturday and, during the race on Sunday, held the spot all the way through the Stage 1. The driver of the No. 69 was in need of a good result after a bad result on the previous round took him out of the Chase standings to the 12th spot.

Drivers ahead of Quiroga on the standings had a rough showing: Jake Cosío (11th place on the standings) was out on lap 6 because a crash; José Luis Ramírez (9th spot) crashed out of the race on lap 50.

Quiroga stood firm on the top spot even through the various restarts that happened on the first 90 laps on his way to the Stage win. Julio Rejón finished 2nd at the end of Stage 1; Alex de Alba was 3rd.

Mateo Girón led most of Stage 1 at the Challenge division. The driver of the No. 05 fended from Giancarlo Vecchi on the restarts and grabbed the Stage win.

Emiliano Richards received a penalty before the race that sent to the back of the field. The Challenge championship leader cut through the field, passing cars steadily; by lap 35 the No. 20 machine was already fighting on the podium. Victor Barrales finished the Stage 3rd.

Unexpected

After the controlled pit stops —3 minute for change of tires and car adjustments— the stock cars went back to the half-mile track; the restart was delayed because of light rain that arrived and went by over the area. After a few minutes the race was restarted.

The Car Motion MotorSport No. 69 machine kept the lead and headed to his first win of the season. That was until lap 152, when Quiroga suddenly stopped on the track, losing all his chances for the win.

Max Gutiérrez received the lead. The No. 23 driver ran inside the Top-5 during the first 150 laps, taking the 2nd spot before the Quiroga situation.

With only a few minutes remaining to the finish, Gutiérrez held the lead on the last two restarts on his way to his first win of the season. Irwin Vences and Rubén García Jr climbed up on the last 15 laps to fight for the podium spots.

García Jr and Vences had an epic battle behind Gutiérrez, fighting side-by-side on the last two laps. The No. 88 grabbed the 2nd place by 0.034 seconds over the No. 46 car. This result meant a 1-2 finish for Team GP Racing on the team home race.

“We’ve been looking fo it. There were races were we were no satisfied —like Aguascalientes—, but our team did an excellent job on the car during the off-weekends. This one is for them!” claimed Gutiérrez after his win.

Girón led the Challenge field on the final Stage, keeping ahead of Richards. But luck of the No. 05 changed dramatically: on lap 120 the rookie driver from Alessandros Racing attempted to lap the No. 44, who closed the door and both cars finished on the wall of the main straight.

Richards received the lead, fought for a while with Gerardo Chispa Rodríguez, and went ahead to get his third win of the season.

The final restarts benefited Víctor Barrales, who jumped from 4th to 2nd at the chequered flag. Jorge de la Parra finished 3rd.

“I’m really happy. It was a tough race. We started at the back because of an issue we had. We knew the car was ready to fight,” mentioned Richards after the podium.

Last Lap Pass

The seventh round of the Trucks México Series showcased the intensity of the opening act on Sunday.

Local driver Roberto Espinosa grabbed Pole Position on Saturday and led the field on the first laps, until the yellow flag was waved on lap 6. The leaders used this chance to make their mandatory pit stop to change a tire.

On the restart, Santiago Cruz pushed for the lead. The No. 26 truck went by through the vehicles that remained on track and gained positions. The Alessandros Racing driver reached the lead and stayed up there getting the Stage win.

After the Stage 1 finished the remaining drivers made their mandatory pit stop. Carlos Novelo also took the chance to visit pit lane and made adjustments an the No. 18 truck.

Cruz kept the lead at the start of the final phase of the race, followed closely by Espinosa. The No. 96 machine bide his time, hunted the No. 26 and got back to the lead on lap 64.

Jan Phillipp Krüll, followed by Novelo, started to push and reached the back of the leaders, Sadly for the No. 7 team, their truck manifested mechanical issues and had to retire.

With 14 laps remaining, a yellow flag -caused by No. 13 and No. 1 trucks- changed the outcome of the race; then another caution on lap 95 sent the race to overtime.

On the last restart, Espinosa and Cruz chose the inside line; Novelo took the outside front row. No. 96 led into Turn 1 but went wide on the exit of Turn 2, opening the door for the No. 26. The Dynamic Motorsports truck blocked the Alessandros Racing driver into Turn 3 and kept the lead heading into the last lap.

Novelo surprised Cruz into Turn 1 of the last lap. With the momentum, the No. 18 attacked Espinos for the lead on the backstretch. Both trucks went side-by-side on the last corners. The Escudería Telmex driver won the race by 0.049 seconds over the No. 96 on another Trucks México Series photo finish.

Carlos Novelo led only one lap, the most important one, on his way to reach his third win of the season.

“It was a great race! My team did a great job to deliver to me a truck at the 100%. During the race we had issues to reach the leaders, we found the pace, the settings and made it to the front,” mentioned Novelo.

NASCAR México Series will be back on August 23rd for the last race of the regular season that is set to be a thrilling spectacle. The race is scheduled at the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed, oval configuration, in Amozoc, Puebla.
